Sarasota County plans events marking 25 years since Sept. 11 attacks

Sarasota County Emergency Services will participate in several remembrance events Friday, Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the 2001 terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 people.

A memorial stair climb will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Nathan Benderson Park’s Finish Tower, where participants can climb the equivalent of the World Trade Center’s 110 stories. Sarasota County Fire Department personnel, apparatus and the department’s Honor Guard will attend. The event is free and open to the public.

At 10:28 a.m., on-duty fire crews who are at their stations will gather outside for a moment of silence marking the time the second World Trade Center tower collapsed. A countywide commemoration involving first responders, veterans, local leaders and clergy is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Patriot Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery.
