Florida Cracker Cattle Return to Urfer Family Park in Sarasota County
Two Florida cracker cattle have been reintroduced at Urfer Family Park in Sarasota County. The cattle, named CC (Cookies and Cream) and Oreo, are descendants of herds originally brought to Florida by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. The breed is recognized for its hardiness, distinctive horns and historical significance to the state's ranching heritage.
Urfer Family Park was once part of a family homestead and working ranch before being preserved as a public community park. The property features nature areas, trails and elements reflecting Sarasota County's agricultural past.
County officials are asking visitors to observe the cattle from a safe distance and not to feed them, noting that human food can be harmful to the animals. The Friends of Sarasota County Parks, a nonprofit organization, is accepting donations to support the care of the cattle through its website at foscp.org.
