Speaker Removed From Sarasota School Board Budget Meeting After Dispute Over Comment Card
A man was removed from the Sarasota County School Board's July 21 budget meeting after a dispute over whether his public comment card had been received.
During the public comment portion of the tentative budget hearing, which had two speaker cards, a man interrupted proceedings, asserting he had filled out an agenda card and that the board had "intentionally discarded" it. The board chair said she had only two cards and asked the man to sit down, telling him the matter would be addressed.
After repeated exchanges in which the chair asked the man to take a seat and warned he would be removed, the man said, "We'll see you in court," and was escorted out at the chair's direction.
Following the removal, the chair clarified for the record that the person warned was the one who acted disruptively. She noted the meeting involved two separate sessions—the budget hearing and the regular board meeting—and said the stack of speaker cards for the later meeting was not yet before her. She said she would welcome the man back if he could follow proper decorum.
