Veteran County Employee Leads Pledge of Allegiance at Commission Meeting

The Sarasota County Commission invited Markus Summers, a U.S. Air Force veteran and Sarasota County employee, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at Tuesday's commission meeting.

Summers served four years in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant and security specialist. In 1986, he was a member of Joint Task Force Bravo in Central America, supporting exercise and training missions aimed at countering Soviet and communist activities in Nicaragua and Honduras.

Before joining Sarasota County Government, Summers held the position of Vice President and Chief of Police for the Federal Reserve Bank, Fifth District. He also retired as Deputy Chief of the Prince George's County, Maryland Police Department after 20 years, accumulating more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and public safety.

His military honors include the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Award, Longevity Service Award and the Air Force Training Award.
